Social Media Censorship Should Concern You
The year is 2019, and it’s clear that social media is quite an important aspect in today’s society.
Social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram are used by millions around the globe.
If you want to become a social influencer or have your brand thrive on the internet, these sites are vital to building a solid following.
However, what do these companies all have in common besides being based out of Silicon Valley?
They all have a left-wing bias and regularly censor users, despite users not even knowing so.
This may sound ludicrous to the casual observer who uses these social media websites regularly, but the evidence is in, and it’s not pretty – not just for conservatives, but anyone worried about censorship on the free and open web we’ve come to know and love.
Whether it’s through shadow-banning or outright suspension, social media and tech companies have become accustomed to censorship, and it’s an issue that should concern everyone.
Examples of Political Censoring
Here are just a few examples of conservatives being censored due to their political beliefs:
Conservative activist Laura Loomer was banned by Twitter for claiming congresswoman Ilhan was pro-Sharia law and anti-Jewish. While Ilhan never responded to the accusations, Loomer was suspended for simply making the claims.
Candace Owens, outspoken conservative for Turning Point USA, was suspended by Twitter. After a massive backlash from fans, Twitter apologized and claimed this was a mistake.
James Woods, a superstar in Hollywood, was suspended for 30 days by Twitter. His account has since been reinstated.
Milo Yiannopoulos, provocateur and former Breitbart-editor, was suspended for allegedly instigating fans to attack actress Leslie Jones. While he outright stated her harassment was not acceptable, Twitter still banned him for the action of his followers.
Gavin McInnes, another conservative, was banned by Twitter and Facebook with no explanation.
Alex Jones, a prominent conspiracy theorist and founder of the conservative website Infowars was by Facebook, Twitter, Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Spotify, Pinterest, and YouTube, all within a month. All platforms mentioned besides Twitter banned him within the same day, leading many to believe tech giants colluded against him.
Whether or not these specific cases merit cause for censorship on in your opinion, also note that Activist Louis Farrakhan has not been censored on any social media, despite calling Jews termites.
As always, the conservatives are the first to be banned, while those on the left are able to speak more freely on social media.
Forget the Politics, This Should Concern You
No matter your personal political affiliation or background, internet censorship should concern you.
You don’t have to agree with these certain people, but they deserve the right to speak freely on the web as we all enjoy the pleasure of doing.
If they espouse “hate speech” or bad ideas, let the readers and audiences decide.
Also realize that this is not just my concern mine alone, with 85% of conservatives feel believe social media censors their political speech.
Political beliefs aside, censorship while masking a disguise of fairness is wrong, period.
